Etymology: viejita is the vernacular name for Apistogramma spp. in eastern Colombia; diminutive of vieja (Spanish: old woman) vernacular for cichlids and other fishes in various parts of South America (Kullander, 1979).
Diagnosis: Apistogramma viejita is easily confused with A. macmasteri. It can be distinguished from A. macmasteri by the following traits: Apistogramma viejita has a relatively slender body shape in males (versus deep, robust body in A. macmasteri).
Caudal fin always round with no extended upper and lower fin rays - no lyretail - on males (versus round to squared off; small upper and lower fin ray extensions - lyretail - on mature specimens).
Lateral band - in neutral mood - narrow, zigzag & almost always continuous from eye to front of caudal spot (versus Lateral band - in neutral mood - wide, zigzag, usually broken into distinct blotches on front half of the body, continuous zigzag band on posterior half).
Dorsal & anal fins in males with moderately extended dorsal spines; tips of dorsal fin spines red; tips of soft part of dorsal & anal fins elongated, extending noticeably beyond the posterior edge of the caudal fin in mature specimens (versus dorsal fin on males with moderately extended spines; tips of dorsal fin spines commonly yellow or gold - Red-shouldered/Rotrücken form with red or gold tips -, tips of soft part of dorsal & anal fins moderately extended in mature specimens, not extending to the posterior edge of the caudal fin)
Caudal spot: narrow, round to rectangular (versus caudal spot: narrow, vertical oval).
