Kunskap kan man aldrig få för lite av, så håll till godo vad Watermillan "Global Moderator" på forumet Finarama.com förmedlar. Finarama.com är ett forum som enbart handlar om Skalarer.

If do you know how much may be look good species, yet? Every good specie must have good and serious description, what may be make on serious amount of samples and informations. If I look on it at easy view, I can say that one good revision made dr. Burgess in 70´s and he said there, that may be only two good species of Pterophyllum genus - Pt. dumerilii and Pt.scalare with two subspecies - Pt.sc. altum and Pt.sc.scalare. It was only prime valid system to 1986 year, when came S.O.Kullander with his work "Cichlid fishes of the Amazon River drainage of Peru" (published by the Department of Vertebrate Zoology, Research Division, Swedish Museum of Natural History, S-104 05 Stockholm, Sweden on the date handstamped in the first 50 copies - ISBN 91-86510-04-5, Printed in Sweden by Märstatryck AB, Märsta, 432 pages), where he wrote, that good species are three: Pt. altum, Pt. leopoldi and Pt. scalare (syn: Pt.dumerili, Pt. eimekei). From this time what I know any new official describtion nobody made to now!
All about "new fishes" - "angels", what we know now is it, that Pt. scalare have more color nature forms as "Manacapuru", "Red spotted I and II", "Rio Purús", local Amazonian to Ucayali forms, etc. Undescribed species how we think as "Rio Negro", "Rio Nanay" (Peru altum), Den Daas or Heiko Bleher´s new agels can be any new species or on the other side only subspecies or forms from Pt. scalare. It nobody was described till!
As far as so new possibilities can be make new revision on top in decoding of DNA spiral sections. And we can been only surmised now, that is possible be more species than these three or can be estabished also, that all are only one good specie with much local subspecies!
Neither new informations, that somebody made last time any new redescribtion by Pterophyllum genus I don´t know and here on Finarama sites I don´t found!
